Everyday, residents use the Lafayette Community Park in Burton Valley to run, walk their dogs, birdwatch, swing in the Grove, enjoy peace and quiet, play on the fields and playground, and spend time in nature with their children.

The Lafayette Parks Commission wants to build BMX bike jumps uphill from the Lafayette Community Park playing fields, right where this little Lafayette girl is swinging. The plan is to bulldoze a 1.8 acre hill, have children build bike jumps (huge piles of dirt), and install a 4 foot high fence. THE PLAN

The BMX jumps will change the entire area. It will disturb the peace and quiet, hurt plants and animals, and limit the things you can do in our Community Park. The Citywants you to believe this is a ' done deal.' But don't be fooled - this is your public land and no BMX jumps will be built in the face of strong opposition.

This is aBAD IDEA because:

NO NEED: $200k+ has been spent but the City has not asked "do we need this?"

WASTE: This project is NOT worth $1 million or the safety of our children.

ILLEGAL: Building BMX jumps with your tax dollars will reward illegal activity on public property. Lafayette Parks Dept. and City Council have developed the Park in violation of the law.

LIMIT: The BMX jumps will limit the available recreation activities in the Park, especially for seniors. What do you like to do in the park?

DEATH: The BMX jumps will cause severe, permanent damage to the environment in and around the Lafayette Community Park and Las Trampas Creek. Animals will die and the hill will be an ugly scar on the entire area. California Red Legged Frog (an endangered species) habitat will be destroyed and part of the creek will be DEWATERED!
